The decks have been cleared for the reopening of the sensational Mahanga double murder case as the Salepur JMFC court has allowed a final protest petition against the then Odisha law minister Pratap Jena. The court has directed to file the protest petition by January 12.

It is pertinent to mention here that BJP leader Kulamani Baral, who was the block chairman of Mahanga, and his associate Dibyasingha Baral were brutally killed on January 2, 2021. Both Kulamani and Dibyasingha were returning home on a bike when some miscreants attacked them with sharp-edged weapons near Jankoti in Mahanga of Cuttack.

Later, the prime accused in the case, Prafulla Biswal, was found dead under mysterious circumstances near Govindpur area at Tangi in Cuttack district.

Deceased Kulamani’s son Ramakant Baral had initially filed the case. Now, after Ramakant’s death, his younger brother Ranjit Baral will fight the case. Ramakant had lodged a written complaint alleging the involvement of the then minister Pratap Jena. He had filed the petition accusing Mahanga police of dropping the Law Minister's name from the chargesheet.

Protesting this, he had prayed court to direct police to file a fresh investigation report by including Jena’s name. As Jena’s name was not included for the second time, Ramakat wanted to file a protest petition. Ramakant had completed all legal formalities, but died. Now, admitting the prayer, the court has allowed Ramakant’s brother Ranjit to file the protest petition by January 12.
