  • The businessman released only after his family members allegedly paid an extortion of Rs 50,000 to the abductors.

Commissionerate Police has arrested five persons, including a lady journalist working for a private web channel in Bhubaneswar, on the charges of kidnapping and torturing a business and his associate.

As per reports, the businessman and his associate were held hostage and tortured by the accused for two consecutive days. The duo was released only after their family members allegedly paid an extortion of Rs 50,000 to the abductors.

Preliminary reports indicate that the businessman from Barbil area and his associate from Kendrapara were engaged in transportation of minerals. They were called to Bhubaneswar by some members of the web channel on August 5, 2021.

Later, the accused allegedly held the duo hostage at an isolated place in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar and demanded an extortion of Rs 10 lakh in lieu of their release.

It is alleged that the businessman and his associate were brutally beaten up by the accused.

The matter came to light after the businessman’s associate formally lodged a complaint with Nandankanan police in connection with the incident.

Based on the written complaint, police swung into action and arrested four persons including the lady journalist of the web channel. Further investigation in connection with the case is underway.

Uma Shankar Dash, Bhubaneswar DCP said that, "As the accused identified themselves to be employees of a media house, many people were not raising their voice against them. We have decided to debar them from entering the city limits and soon a Tadipaar notice will be issued."
