In a special drive, the Malkanagiri Police on Saturday busted a syndicate involved in placing bets online during the final match of Indian Premier League (IPL) and arrested four persons in that connection.

Speaking to the reporters, Malkangiri SDPO Abhilash G said, "Acting on reliable information that four bookies in the town were running the betting racket during the final match of IPL between KKR and CSK, police conducted raids in the vicinity and arrested them."

The police recovered Rs 8 lakh in cash and froze Rs 18 lakh in the bank account allegedly being used for online transactions during the gambling. Apart from that, the police have also seized mobile phones, ATM cards, bank passbooks and other documents from their possession, he said.

He further added that the accused were indulging in online betting through Freedom and Radhe mobile apps. These apps provide a username and password to punters to participate in betting after receiving money through net banking. 

Stating that these four bookies were operating in coordination with their accomplice in Chhattisgarh and were receiving a commission of only thirty percent, the SDPO informed.

The accused will be interrogated further and an investigation is also on to arrest the mastermind of the gang, the police officer stated.
