The Gangpur police busted a fake liquor racket operating out of Dhanapunja village in Ganjam district and arrested as many as five persons in that connection, on Wednesday.

The accused allegedly used to manufacture duplicate liquor, filled them in bottles of expensive brands and supplied them in and around Ganjam, sources said.

According to reports, the Gangpur police had earlier seized a car carrying huge quantity of liquor at a check post near Gangpur and arrested the driver. The cops came to know about the racket following the interrogation of the driver.

Acting on the tip-off, a special squad conducted a raid at the counterfeit liquor production unit and nabbed the accused while they were busy manufacturing the fake spirits. They will be forwarded to a court later today. Huge volume of liquor, spirits, fake stickers and other materials were seized from the manufacturing unit.

 “The team found and confiscated 152 litres of fake Foreign Liquor (FL), spirit bottles, lid caps and labels. As many as five mobile phones, Rs 3,000 in cash and a car have also been seized from the spot. Further investigation into the incident is underway,” said Bhanjanagar Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Subhransu Sekhar Mishra.

Earlier on February 27 this year, the Excise department had busted another fake liquor manufacturing unit at Truptinagar under the Bada Bazaar police limits in the district. As many as five persons were arrested in connection with the conduct of the unit.

The Berhampur police had busted a fake sauce manufacturing unit at Ganesh Nagar area under Bada Bazar police limits on January 21. Police had seized a huge stock of the adulterated sauce and raw materials used in the manufacturing of the edibles.
