The officials of district excise department were attacked by liquor mafias while the former had gone to conduct raids on an illegal liquor manufacturing unit at Karadapalli under Tigiria Police limits of Athagarh area in Cuttack district on Saturday morning.

However, no officials were injured in the attack while none has been arrested in connection with the incident yet.

Acting on a tip-off about the illegal liquor manufacturing unit at the village, a team of Cuttack excise including the Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent of the concerned department along with a flying quad team of Cuttack Police conducted raids at the unit situated at Karadapalli village.

The mafias present at the unit hurled abuses on them. Later, they attacked their vans with petrol bomb and pelted stones, informed Debasish Patel, Deputy Superintendent of Cuttack Excise Department.

The Excise team called upon the Athagarh Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) and Tigiria Police Station Inspector-In-Charge (IIC) for help.

"The Tigiria Police Station IIC and SDPO along with a team rushed to the spot after getting information and rescued us," added Patel.

"The attackers hurled petrol bombs and stones from the nearby forest on the vans and disappeared in the jungle. Some of them have been identified and cases have been registered against them. Investigation is underway. The attackers will be nabbed soon," said Alok Ranjan Ray, Athagarh Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO).

Meanwhile, the Excise department has seized 24,000 litres fermented wash, 1,350 alcohol and a gun from the illegal factory.
