In a shocking incident, a man allegedly killed his wife and 9-year-old son in Kalinga Nagar area on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar under Tamando Police limits, on Tuesday evening. He has been detained for questioning.

As per reports, the bodies of the mother-son duo was recovered by the Tamando police which rushed to the house in Kalinga Nagar K-4 area after they were informed about the gruesome double murders. The deceased woman was identified as Swarnalata Mangaraj. However, her husband Abanti Mangaraj was missing from the house when the police team reached the house. He was subsequently tracked down and is currently being questioned to ascertain the reason behind the murders.

Sources said initially it was suspected that Abanti had strangulated his wife and son to death before fleeing the spot. The doubts were confirmed after the police managed to nab him. He allegedly admitted before the police to the crime.

"Our team rushed to the spot and found the bodies lying in the bedroom. We immediately informed the police stations across the city to track down the killer," informed Umashankar Dash, DCP, Bhubaneswar.

"We have detained the accused Abanti Mangaraj after he admitted to killing his wife and son by strangulating them. However, we are yet to ascertain the reason and circumstances that provoked him to commit the heinous crime," he further added.

Meanwhile, a forensic team has arrived at the crime scene to collect further evidence from. “We will soon discover the reason behind the crime,” informed an official from the Tamando police station.

"The family was residing in Kalinga Nagar area since many years, but they had shifted to the current house 7-8 months back. We have heard that, the accused (Avanti) used to drink alcohol regularly and we suspect that he must have done the crime in inebriated condition," a neighbour said.
