A drug peddler from West Bengal was arrested by a team of Crime Branch’s Special Task Force (STF) following a raid near Tangi on NH-16. Brown Sugar weighing 1.043 grams has been seized from the accused, identified as Safikul Sk alias Khokan of Murshidabad in the neighbouring State.

Khokan was arrested while he was trying to strike a deal of the narcotics near Tangi on Wednesday. The value of the seized contraband is said to be around Rs 1 crore, STF officials said.

The accused was nabbed following a raid by a team of STF, Bhubaneswar regarding the illegal trade of narcotics drugs. “During search, Brown Sugar weighing 01 Kg 043 gram and other incriminating materials were recovered and seized from his possession. The accused person could not produce any valid authority in support of possession of such contraband materials, for which the accused person was arrested and will be forwarded to the court of Special Judge cum District and Sessions Judge, Cuttack,” STF said in a release.

A case under section 21(c)/29 NDPS Act, 1985 has been registered in connection with the incident. STF officials said that the involvement of other interstate peddlers has been established and steps are being taken to nab the culprits.

On October 19, 2.4Kgs of brown sugar worth over Rs 2.5 crore was seized from Jhadeswarpur in Balasore district by a joint team of excise officials and Jaleswar Police.

Police had also arrested three persons including two women and a hotel owner (Mukhtar Ali Khan) in connection with the case.
