In a major breakthrough, the Commissionerate Police on Sunday seized over one Kilogram of brown sugar worth approximately Rs 1 crore from the city and arrested three persons in this connection.

Acting on a tip off about the smuggling of the contraband, a team from Markat Nagar Phase-2 police station and the Special Squad conducted searches on Madhusudan Setu and seized the brown sugar.

As per reports, the Police have also seized a car and a bike from their possession. 

“Acting on a specific input about the smuggling of brown sugar, we intercepted a bike and car coming from Athagarh side on Madhusudan Setu and seized the contraband yesterday,” Twin City Police Commissioner Saumendra Priyadarshi said.

“Three people have been arrested in connection with the case and 1 kg and 38 gm brown sugar has been seized from their possession. Further investigation into the matter is on and necessary measures will be taken to contain peddling of the contraband in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar,” he added.

It is worthwhile to mention here that, the special squad of the Commissionerate Police on Thursday had seized 1.12 kg of brown sugar worth over Rs 1 crore and arrested three persons in this connection in the city.

The drug peddlers were arrested from a mango orchard near Tinigharia area under Madhupatna police limits.

The squad also seized a motor cycle used for this brown sugar trade, Rs 17,000 cash and four cell-phones from the possession of the arrested persons
