  • Tension ran high at the BJB Autonomous College campus following a group clash between the inmates of two different hostels in Bhubaneswar

Tension ran high at the BJB Autonomous College campus following a group clash between the inmates of two different hostels in Bhubaneswar on Thursday.

As many as 15 students have sustained injury in the incident. They have been admitted to a hospital in the vicinity of the renowned college in the State capital.

According to reports, the clash broke out between the inmates of Kharavela Hostel and Ambedkar Hostel over an old dispute.

Some senior students of Kharavela Hostel allegedly entered the Ambedkar Hostel and attacked junior students on Thursday afternoon. The intruders also allegedly ransacked hostel property including furniture, utensils and window glasses.

“A few days ago, some senior students of Kharavela Hostel dragged two of our inmates out of the hostel. One of them is differently-abled. They thrashed them and ridiculed them on caste lines,” said a resident at Ambedkar Hostel.

“They were rescued by the other inmates after one of the victims managed to call us. It however, did not go down well with the senior inmates of Kharavela hostel, who came back with a vengeance today and attacked us unprovoked,” he claimed.

Many inmates of Ambedkar Hostel also alleged they too were at the receiving end of the attack by Kharavela hostel inmates though they had no involvement in the earlier incident.

“We demand an inquiry into the incident and justice,” said another student.

Police forces have been deployed in the campus following the incident to maintain law and order.

The Principal of the college has convened a council meeting tomorrow at 9 am to discuss the incident.

“All the students have been ordered to vacate the hostel as repair works will be undertaken. An inquiry will be ordered into the incident soon,” the principal said.
