The alleged suicide of Ruchika Mohanty, a Plus 3 first year History (Hons) student of BJB Autonomous College in Bhubaneswar, on Saturday owing to ragging has reminded people of a similar incident that occurred 17 years ago.

Richa Mishra, a Commerce student of the institute, had ended her life on November 18, 2005. The suicide note she had left behind had led to the arrest of three lecturers.

In her suicide note, Richa had mentioned that three lecturers of the college had been harassing her and awarded less marks in the examinations after she refused to take private tuition from them.

Eight months later, three lecturers of the institution were arrested after the deceased’s allegations were proved.

Now, Ruchika Mohanty taking her life has added another chapter of suicidal death to BJB Autonomous College’s history.

Ruchika’s father Ganeswar Mohanty, while crying inconsolably said, “I had never imagined that my daughter would end life due to ragging in a college like BJB Autonomous College. They have killed my daughter.”

In this regard, Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Singh informed, “Badagada police have launched an investigation into the BJB College’s Plus 3 first year student committing suicide after registering an unnatural death case.”
