In a major development into the death case of a girl student of BJB Autonomous College in Bhubaneswar, whose body was found hanging in her hostel today, a purported handwritten note has surfaced which hinted that she committed suicide.

In the note written in Odia, the victim, Ruchika Mohanty, stated that she was ending her life after getting fed up with mental harassment by three senior girl students.

Ruchika, a Plus 3 first year student of History (Hons), alleged that she was mentally tortured by the three senior girl students that compelled her to take the extreme step.

Ruchika’s father, Ganeswar Mohanty who was inconsolable in front of the media personnel, said, “I still can’t believe my daughter is no more. This is not tolerable at all.”

BJB College principal Niranjan Mishra said, “When I learnt about the incident, I rang the IIC and asked him to reach the hostel.  Upon being reached we found her dead. Her roommates said that when they left for class at 10am, she was happy. She asked them to bring note for her. They never knew that she could take such step.”

Bhubaneswar DCP, Prateek Singh said, “Badagada Police received a report this morning about a +3 1st year girl student not responding to knocks on her hostel door. When the police reached it was seen that she had hanged herself inside the room.”

“We have registered an unnatural death case and the investigation is currently on,” Singh added.

It is worthwhile to mention here that tension prevailed at the college campus after the news of the suicide spread. A student organisation, Nabanirmana Chhatra Sangathan protested at the main gate and raised slogans against the college authorities.
