The parents of Ruchika Mohanty, a student of BJB Autonomous College in Bhubaneswar whose body was found hanging in her college hostel on Saturday, staged a sit-in at the college gate, demanding for a CBI enquiry into ragging allegation that reportedly led to her death.

In her suicide note, the deceased student mentioned that she was ending her life as three senior students had been harassing her mentally.

The student’s father Ganeswar Mohanty alleged the college authorities had been protecting the three students who are responsible for their daughter’s death.

“We are demanding for a CBI enquiry, identification of culprits and exemplary punishment to them so that no parents would suffer the situation we are going through,” said Ganeswar.

Coming out in the support of the parents, members of Naba Nirmana Chhatra Sangathan also joined them in the sit-in.

Meanwhile, Chairperson of Odisha State Commission for Women Minati Behera visited the college. She  interacted with the hostel warden and students to find out what circumstances forced Ruchika to take an extreme step.

“Since the investigation is underway, I can’t reveal what we unearthed during our investigation. Another thing I would like to share that we wish proper care of girl students should be taken wherever they are staying,” Behera maintained.

Back in the deceased student’s village Kakhadi in Cuttack district, her friends and village youths took out a candle rally praying for the eternal peace for the departed soul.

They urged all students to join in the fight to give justice to Ruchika.
