The arrested corporator has been identified as Narasingha Sethi, who is the corporator of ward no-25 of the BeMC. He had allegedly attacked Arun Kumar Maharana of the same locality with a sword in the wee hours. A video of the incident had also gone viral.

The incident occurred during the immersion procession of Ganesh idol. During the procession, two groups confronted each other, and in no time they engaged in a clash.

In this connection, the victim’s family had lodged a complaint at the Town police station.

Acting on the complaint, the police have so far arrested seven persons from both sides. Among the arrested persons is the brother of the corporator who is a constable posted at the Vigilance department.

“The corporator attacked my nephew with a sword. We had elected him to take care of us. Instead, he is attacking us,” said Basanti Maharana, a relative of the injured person.

When contacted, Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek said “There had been animosity between the two groups since September 1. They again came face to face on Wednesday night. In the wee hours, the members of the two gangs attacked each other with sharp weapons.”
