AI helps nab poachers in Similipal
In a significant crackdown, the enforcement team at Simlipal Wildlife Sanctuary has arrested six alleged poachers, utilising advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. These individuals were spotted by AI cameras while apparently hunting a deer within the protected area.
The authorities, upon acquiring photographic evidence, immediately launched a series of operations across various villages in the Dukura range within Simlipal. This strategic move culminated in the arrest of six suspects.

The individuals have been identified as Budhia Hembram, Rath Singh, Bula Singh, Mithun Hembram, Lakshman Soren, and Pradhan Soren. They are said to be residents of villages that fall under the jurisdiction of Khunta police station. During the operation, law enforcement officials seized three country-made firearms alongside other hunting articles.
The suspects have been produced before the Baripada Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court. The accused are set to face legal proceedings following their production in court.
The development marks a notable success in the ongoing efforts to combat illegal poaching activities within Odisha's Simlipal, a sanctuary that holds significant biodiversity and is crucial for wildlife conservation efforts in India.
In January this year, the authorities in Southern Similipal have utilised artificial intelligence (AI) cameras to capture images leading to the arrest of poachers.
The use of AI technology is gaining momentum in wildlife protection efforts, aiming to curb illegal poaching activities that threaten biodiversity in the region.
