As many as 20 people were detained after a surprise raid was conducted on a gambling den by Koraput police in Borigumma area late on Sunday night.

The gambling activities were going on inside a Nilgiri forest under Borigumma police limits. More than Rs 7 lakh cash and playing cards were seized from the spot during the raid.

While 20 gamblers were nabbed, several others managed to give the police team a slip. The raid was conducted following the direction of Korput Superintendent of Police.

Speaking about the raid, BorigummaSub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO)HarekrushnaMajhi said, “As per the direction of Koraput SP, a special team conducted the surprise raid on the gambling den. A sum of Rs 7,83,440 was seized and 20 persons were detained. The detainees are from Nabarangpur, Jeypore and some local residents.”

It is worth mentioning here that gambling activities continued unabated in several parts of the State despite repeated crackdown by police. The illegal game is rampant in Berhampur and other districts during festive season.

On June 15, a gambling den was busted near Ranipada village under Banpur police limits of Khordha district. Seven persons were arrested in connection with the gambling along with seizure of cash and other valuables.
