Rourkela: As many as a dozen of gamblers were arrested in one of the biggest anti-gambling drives by the Odisha Police ahead of the New Year in the Steel City on Saturday.

The police also seized over Rs 12.27 lakh in cash, two cars, five bikes, mobile phones and seven packets of playing cards from the den which was operating out of a hotel along the Gurudwara Road. The hotel is located in the vicinity of the Rourkela Steel Plant site.

Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Rourkela Police led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Asim Panda raided the gambling den and rounded up the gamblers on the spot.

“Further investigation is underway to find out the involvement of other players in the operation of the gambling den,” said Panda.

All the accused have been booked under Section/s 269/270/34 of IPC and the Orissa Prevention of Gambling (OPG) Act.

Earlier on October 24, the Ganjam police had busted 14 gambling dens and arrested as many as 68 gamblers in a special drive. Rs 1.53 lakh in cash, four mobile phones and an equal number of motorcycles belonging to the gamblers had been seized.
