2 rape accused held after encounter in Odisha’s Jharsuguda
Two rape accused sustained bullet injuries following an encounter with police after they tried to escape arrest in Odisha’s Jharsuguda. The suspects, Sheikh Ashish and Abhishek Barik, sustained injuries in their legs during a police shootout on Belpahar-Jharsuguda road and are currently receiving medical treatment, police said.
Background of the Case:
According to the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Jharsuguda, the two had been previously detained and were in transit to court. However, the suspects reportedly attacked the police officers and managed to seize a firearm. This led to an exchange of gunfire, prompting a swift police response.
The SP reported that officers had no choice but to retaliate after the rape accused opened fire. Currently, an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the confrontation is being led by the region's Inspector General (IG) along with local law enforcement agencies.
Multiple Charges:
The Inspector General of the Northern Range commented on the situation, stating that the accused had been arrested the previous day. They face multiple charges, including making death threats against a minor's family.
