Bhubaneswar: The vacillating trend of the daily Covid cases in Odisha for the past several days saw a big drop on Tuesday with the State recording 2,640 positives, its record low in over last two months. The new cases have taken the State's cumulative virus count tally to 9,06,429.

However, even as the number of cases has dropped significantly, there has been no relief in daily fatalities with the State registering 40 fresh casualties due to the contagious virus taking its total death toll to 3970.

Taking to Twitter, the health department stated, "Regret to inform about the demise of forty Covid-positive patients while under treatment in hospitals."

Khordha district with State Capital Bhubaneswar accounted for maximum deaths at 7, followed by Bargarh, Cuttack, Nayagarh at five each. Puri recorded four deaths in last 24 hours.

Three patients succumbed to the virus infection each in Ganjam and Angul districts while Kalahandi reported two fatalities.

Similarly, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Koraput, Nabarangpur and Sambalpur districs witnessed one casualty each due to the Covid 19, the health department informed.

As many as 3385 patients have recovered during the period taking the recovery tally to 87,0787. The State has currently 31619 active cases.

Balasore district reported the maximum number of fresh infections at 397, followed 365 in Khordha and 266 in Cuttack, State Information and Public Relation Department tweeted.

Jajpur remained the fourth position with 162 new cases and Mayurbhanj stood behind it with 155 fresh infections. Similarly, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Bhadrak recorded 178, 132 and 128 new cases respectively during the period.

Three districts Deogarh, Jharsuguda and Nuapada- registered single digit cases while the rest reported double-digit figures.
