New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Here’s a good news for train passengers. The Indian Railways has come up with some new changes helping lakhs of railway commuters get tickets at a cheaper rate.
As per reports, Railways has announced that the train passengers are now exempted from the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR)—MDR will now not be levied on them.
This decision of the national transporter will make rail tickets slightly cheaper for passengers.
"Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charges will not be levied on passengers for booking railway tickets (at the railway ticketing counters as well as through IRCTC ticketing website) on payment made through Debit Cards for a transaction value up to Rs 1 lakh," said the Railways in a statement.

The Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, has issued directions to banks in this regard and it hopes increase in digital and cashless transactions following the move, The Economic Times reported.

"Ministry of Railways had informed Department of Expenditure that all proceeds from sale of tickets through IRCTC website/counters go to Consolidated Fund of India through Ministry of Railways and such transactions should be considered as Government receipts. The benefits on Government transactions must be passed on to the public, and they should not face MDR charges while making payments to Government," the statement further read.
It is worth mentioning that the facility was under testing at Hubballi, Bengaluru and Mysuru stations of South Western Railway.
