Dangal celebrity Fatima Sana Shaikh recently opened up about her epilepsy battle on her Instagram account. To raise awareness for National Epilepsy Day on November 17, the actress shared symptoms and facts about the disorder in an Instagram post.
What is epilepsy?
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines epilepsy as a chronic noncommunicable brain disease that affects approximately 50 million people worldwide and is characterised by recurrent seizures, episodes of involuntary movement of a body part, and loss of consciousness. It is a neurological disorder characterised by abnormal brain activity, resulting in seizures or periods of unusual behaviour, sensations, and, in some cases, loss of awareness.

Epilepsy Causes
Other causes of epilepsy include brain abnormalities, brain tumours, cavernous malformations, arteriovenous malformations, brain injury, severe head injury, brain infection, and certain genetic syndromes.
Epilepsy Signs and Symptoms
Temporary confusion, a staring smell, stiff muscles, uncontrollable jerking movements of arms and legs, fear, anxiety, and loss of consciousness or awareness are all common signs and symptoms of this disorder.
Treatment of Epilepsy
Anti-epileptic drugs, surgery to remove the small part of the brain that causes seizures, a special diet known as the ketogenic diet, and a procedure to implant a small electrical device inside the boy to help control the development of seizures are all treatments for epilepsy. However, some people may require treatment for the rest of their lives. Adequate sleep, abstaining from drugs and alcohol, and adhering to a ketogenic diet are some lifestyle changes that can help with epilepsy management.
Epilepsy does not spread. Although many underlying disease mechanisms can cause epilepsy, the cause of the disease remains unknown in approximately 50% of cases worldwide.
