The Ranbir Kapoor-starrer, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, drew both acclaim and criticism for its portrayal of masculinity and raw emotion. Now, actor Emraan Hashmi has offered a fresh perspective - he genuinely liked the film.

Emraan Hashmi's Honest Review on Animal

During a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Emraan said, “See Animal, I mean, people might have a divided house there with people either loving the film or hating the film. But I love the film… You can see his conviction there. He's a director who kind of just went there with all his heart, and he has made the film that he wants to make. It is uncorrupted.”

Admiration for Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Bold Direction

Emraan went on to praise Vanga’s confidence and visual storytelling, which he felt set Animal apart from conventional Bollywood cinema. “I saw the first scene in that film… No one takes shots that way. He has not even cut over shoulder for that first scene that went on… There’s the confidence of the director because the scene holds and it's a long scene…. It is audaciously different what the directors has done with that.” The actor’s comments reflect his appreciation for Vanga’s fearless filmmaking - a creative expression that prioritised authenticity over formulaic storytelling.

A Film That Divided Critics but Dominated the Box Office

Released in December 2023, Animal became a major cultural moment and a record-breaking box-office hit. Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Rannvijay Singh, the film explored a turbulent father-son relationship that spirals into a brutal saga of vengeance.

Alongside Ranbir, the film featured Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, and Triptii Dimri in pivotal roles. Despite backlash for its perceived glorification of toxic masculinity, Animal resonated with a large section of viewers and cemented Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s reputation as a director unafraid to take creative risks. Its sequel, Animal Park, is already in the works.

Emraan Hashmi Gears Up for His Next

Releases Up next, Emraan Hashmi will be seen in Haq, a courtroom drama inspired by the landmark Shah Bano case. He plays a lawyer championing women’s rights and dignity, while Yami Gautam stars as his wife. Directed by Suparn S Varma, the film also features Vartika Singh, Danish Husain, Sheeba Chadha, and Aseem Hattangady. Produced by Vineet Jain, Vishal Gurnani, Juhi Parekh Mehta, and Harman Baweja, Haq releases in theatres on November 7.
