Anil Kapoor reclaims Nayak rights; sequel talk heats up after 25 years

Nearly a quarter-century after Nayak: The Real Hero thundered into theatres, the film is once again making headlines- this time not for its dialogues or political punch, but for a major behind-the-scenes development. Reports suggest that Anil Kapoor has acquired the film’s copyrights, opening the door to a sequel that fans have long speculated about.

Early Buzz Around Nayak 2

The sequel chatter first gained momentum when producer Deepak Mukut confirmed that Nayak 2 was in the works. At the time, the script was reportedly under development, with plans to reunite Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji.

An official announcement seemed imminent, and excitement only intensified when rumours linked Siddharth Anand to the project, with claims that he had locked the story and would bankroll the film. Adding fuel to the fire were whispers of Akshay Kumar collaborating with the Pathaan filmmaker. 

A New Turn in the Tale

However, the narrative has now taken an interesting turn. The latest reports indicate that Anil Kapoor himself has stepped in decisively by securing the rights to Nayak, potentially taking creative and production control of its future.

According to Bollywood Hungama, almost 25 years after the film’s original release, Anil Kapoor has purchased the rights and may produce the sequel independently. Nayak was originally backed by A.S. Rathnam, with the rights later transferring to Deepak Mukut.

Anil Kapoor Acquires Nayak Copyrights, Sequel On Cards?

Quoting a source, Bollywood Hungama reported, “Producer Deepak Mukut of Sanam Teri Kasam fame held the rights to Nayak. It is said that Anil Kapoor has bought the rights from him. He plans to hold the rights as it’s a film close to his heart. Also, he aspires to make a sequel to it."

The source further added, "He is fully aware of the love he has garnered for the film over the years and believes that the subject of Nayak has tremendous potential for a second part.”

Despite this optimism, there has been no official confirmation regarding Nayak 2 so far.

Conflicting Reports, Rising Expectations

Earlier, Pinkvilla had reported that Siddharth Anand and Mamata Anand were set to produce Nayak 2 under Marflix Pictures, envisioning it as a large-scale political drama. Milan Luthria was reportedly attached as director, with a storyline that would organically extend the original, combining action, high-voltage drama, and sharp dialogues.

A subsequent Pinkvilla update hinted at discussions between Siddharth Anand and Akshay Kumar for a Milan Luthria-directed action thriller. While the project wasn’t explicitly titled Nayak 2, industry insiders speculated that it could indeed be the much-talked-about sequel.
