The Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE, has come up with some major examination reforms for Class 10 and Class 12 students, effective 2026.

CBSE Examination Reforms for Class 10
From 2026, CBSE will conduct Class 10 Board Examinations twice a year. It will be mandatory for all Class X students to appear in the first Board Examination.

Students, who pass will be eligible to improve their performance in up to three subjects out of Science, Mathematics, Social Science and Languages. Students placed in the Compartment category after the first examination will be permitted to appear in the second examination under the Compartment category.
For Science and Social Science, the concerned subject experts will evaluate scripts subject-wise to enhance accuracy and ensure specialised assessment.
CBSE Examination Reforms for Class 12
For Class12, evaluation will transition to a digital On-Screen Marking (OSM) system to strengthen transparency, precision and efficiency.

The envisaged benefits of OSM include elimination of totalling errors, automated coordination with reduced manual intervention, faster evaluation through wider teacher participation, savings in transportation time and cost, and enabling teachers to continue regular duties at their schools.

Post-result verification of marks will no longer be required, reducing manpower requirements. The system enables participation from all affiliated schools, including those overseas, and promotes environmentally sustainable digital evaluation.
Evaluation of Class X answer books will continue in physical mode in 2026.
