Bhubaneswar: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Saturday issued a notice regarding permitting students for improvement of performance in compartment examinations.
The circular assumes significance as the Government of India has released the National Education Policy (NEP) wherein it has been envisaged that student must be given multiple opportunities for improving their performances in subjects opted by them.
Keeping in view the recommendations made in the NEP, CBSE has decided to extend several opportunities to students of Class 10 and 12 who have passed the examinations. These include:
-Students of Class 10, 12 will be given an opportunity to improve their performance only in one subject in the Compartment examination, conducted immediately after the conduct of the main examination.
-Better of two marks obtained in the subject will be considered for declaration of results .
-Candidates who will improve their performance will be issued combined marksheet.
At present the rule 44.1 stipulates that a candidate of class-XII who has passed an examination of the Board may reappear for improvement of performance in one or more subjects in the succeeding year only.

However, a candidate who has passed an examination of the Board under Vocational Scheme may reappear for improvement of performance in the main examination in the succeeding year or the following year provided they have not pursued higher studies in the meantime.
Candidates who appear for improvement of performance will be issued only Statement of Marks reflecting the marks of the improvement examination.
Similarly rule 44.2 stipulates that a candidate of class-X who has obtained minimum Grade D in the five subjects under Scholastic Area A and a Qualifying Certificate/Grade-sheet-Cum Certificate of Performance at the Secondary School Examination may reappear at the examination for upgrading of performance in one or more subjects in the main examination in succeeding year only, provided he/she has not pursued higher studies in the meantime.
He/she shall appear as a private candidate. Those reappearing in the whole examination may appear as regular candidates also. The candidates appearing for upgrading of performance in the examination can appear in the subject(s) in which they have appeared for the examination.
As per CBSE, in case students wish to improve in more than two subjects they need to appear in the examination as mentioned in Rule 44.1 and 44.2. The rest conditions will remain the same.
“This permission will be made available to the candidates appearing in 2021 examination and if they wish to improve their performance in any one subject they may again apply in the compartment examination for appearing to improve their performance,” the CBSE notification added.
