The scandal exploded into the political space here recently after an American businessman of Pakistani-origin wrote in a newspaper article about his handing a secret memo, purportedly written the country`s Ambassador to US Husain Haqqani on behalf of President Asif Ali Zardari, to Admiral Mike Mullen, the then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The memo, written days after Osama bin Laden was killed in a US raid in Abbottabad, seeks American help to stave off a possible military takeover. "The Ambassador has already been summoned to Pakistan, hopefully he will be here. And I think in all his dignity, as I understand, he has already offered his resignation to the President of Pakistan," Malik said.
Meanwhile, Pakistan`s opposition leader and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has sought an "impartial probe" into the entire incident. "The issue will surely have a repercussion. It is not possible that issue of such magnitude can go unnoticed," he said demanding a probe.
