Washington: Facing a "continuing threat" from al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups, the US has established a new bureau of counter-terrorism, which will lead its efforts in fighting the menace abroad and protect the country by adopting measures like strengthening homeland security. The Bureau of Counter-terrorism, established by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, would assume the responsibilities of the existing Office of the Coordinator for Counter-terrorism.

"The mission of the new bureau will be to lead the Department in the US Government`s effort to counter terrorism abroad and to secure the United States against foreign terrorist threats," Ambassador-at-Large Daniel Benjamin, Coordinator for Counter-terrorism, said at a news briefing at the State Department. "The bureau will have a number of concrete responsibilities," he said, while announcing the establishment of the bureau.
