Washington: A 21-year-old Hispanic man who allegedly called US President Barack Obama the "devil" has been charged with attempting to assassinate him by firing shots at the White House.

Oscar Ortega-Hernandez was produced before a US federal court in Pittsburgh on Thursday, a day after he was arrested by the police from a hotel in Pennsylvania. He could face a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
