London: A 27-vehicle pile up on a southwest England motorway under foggy and rainy conditions triggered explosions and an inferno, claiming several lives and leaving up to 35 people injured, police said today. The accident, which happened close to junction 25 northbound in the wee hours today led to "one massive fireball" at the scene, the BBC reported. Six articulated lorries were involved in the collision, according to the fire service.

"Several" people were killed and up to 35 injured in the 27-vehicle crash on the M5 near Taunton, Somerset, a police official was quoted as saying. Emergency crew said the cause of the crash was not clear, but there had been reports of heavy rain and fog.
