Male: Maldives first democratically elected president Mohamed Nasheed will go on trail today on abuse of power charges, nearly eight months after he resigned following what he called "coup d'etat".

Nasheed, 45, is facing trial for detaining the chief criminal court judge on corruption allegations during his final days in office. The trial will be presided over by a three-Judge bench. Nasheed was forced out in a police mutiny after he detained the judge. A Maldivian court has slapped a travel ban on Nasheed pending the hearing.
