Potholes on Indian roads have long been dubbed “silent killers,” disrupting daily commutes and causing thousands of accidents every year. According to government data and multiple road safety reports, poorly maintained roads contribute significantly to fatalities, especially during monsoons when craters remain hidden under water. Despite repeated complaints, civic bodies across cities often delay repairs, and even when potholes are fixed, poor-quality patchwork leads to rapid damage.

Kakinada’s Innovative Answer to an Old Problem
Breaking away from this troubling pattern, Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada city has introduced an innovative solution, a specialised pothole-repairing vehicle popularly called ‘The Road Doctors’. Recently, a video showcasing the machine in action went viral on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, drawing widespread praise from citizens and urban planners alike.
In the video, a carrier van is seen stationed mid-road as workers unload and deploy the compact machine. Within minutes, the equipment fills and levels potholes efficiently, reducing repair time and traffic disruption.

Social media users lauded the quick-fix approach, calling it “practical,” “cost-effective,” and “long overdue.”
India’s First-of-Its-Kind Pothole Repair System
As per claims by the Kakinada Municipal Corporation, ‘The Road Doctors’ is India’s first-of-its-kind mechanised pothole repair system. What makes the initiative stand out is its affordability. With a municipal budget far smaller than cities like Bengaluru, Kakinada managed to deploy advanced road-repair technology, proving that innovation does not always require massive funding.
A Model for Other Indian Cities?
Urban development experts and civic activists believe Kakinada’s initiative could serve as a blueprint for other Indian cities grappling with deteriorating road conditions. Reports from infrastructure-focused publications and reactions from verified social media accounts highlight that mechanised, quick-response solutions can significantly improve road safety if implemented consistently.
