Railway doctor's quick response saves passenger with dislocated jaw; watch

A swift medical intervention by a railway doctor at Palakkad Junction on Saturday prevented a passenger’s distress from turning into a medical emergency.

According to a post on X by Southern Railway, a 24-year-old passenger, who was travelling on the Kanniyakumari–Dibrugarh Vivek Express, suffered a jaw dislocation moments before the train’s departure but was treated promptly on the platform and was able to resume his journey within minutes.

The post added that Dr Jithin P S, Divisional Medical Officer (DMO) at the Palakkad Railway Hospital, rushed to the scene after being alerted by station staff. A video shared shows Dr Jithin performing a manual reduction procedure, a standard method involving precise downward and backward manipulation of the mandible to realign the jaw.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocations, the medical term for jaw dislocations, can result from wide yawning, sudden jaw movement, or trauma. Immediate correction is crucial to prevent pain, muscle spasm, and potential airway complications.

Dr Jithin’s quick action exemplified the readiness of the Indian Railways’ on-ground medical teams to handle emergencies. “The passenger was treated on-site and continued his journey safely,” Southern Railway confirmed in its official statement.
