Two ‘wives’ allege abuse, threat by husband to leak intimate images

Two women, allegedly wives of one man identified as Sitangshu Shekhar, on Thursday knocked on the door of the Bhadrak Superintendent of Police (SP) alleging harassment and exploitation.

According to the complaints filed at the Bhadrak rural police station, Sitangshu, who is reportedly working in Bengaluru as a food seller, allegedly cheated and married the two at the same time. He later defrauded them of gold jewellery and lakhs of rupees after marriage.

Both women have also accused him of threatening to leak intimate and obscene photos online. The first wife, married in June 2022 in the Balasore area, claimed she was subjected to both physical and mental abuse and had her valuables forcibly taken.

“After marriage, he demanded Rs 10L cash in dowry. But, as per our ability, my family gave dowry items and jewellery worth Rs 5-7L with Rs 50K net cash. However, they were not satisfied and started getting abusive and threatening me. They tortured me a lot. All his mother, father, and sister are also involved with him,” alleged the first wife.

Likewise, the second wife, whom he married secretly in 2024 in Bhadrak Charampa, has also lodged a complaint citing similar harassment and exploitation.

“I wasn’t aware of his first marriage. My mother sold our land, and my share of Rs 17-18L was taken away by him. He has also mortgaged my gold jewellery at UCO Bank in Dhamnagar. We had given him a chain and ring as dowry that he has now sold. This apart, he has inflicted inhumane torture on me,” the second wife alleged.

Authorities have stated that Sitangshu and his family have not yet responded to the allegations. The SP confirmed that a special team has been formed to investigate the matter thoroughly, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.

The case has drawn attention due to the serious nature of the complaints and the involvement of multiple victims, and the police have assured that strict action will be taken after investigation.
