The pandemic has had an adverse impact on people of all strata. It has not just affected people's health, but also their livelihood. However, even if the world seems to be getting its lost footing back on track, many have pinned their hopes on sheer luck to give a boost to their dwindling businesses.

Similar is the situation in Bhubaneswar. With a major festival Diwali right around the corner, government has put a blanket ban on sale of crackers. Amid such restrictions, artisans and earthen lamp makers in Bhubaneswar have been desperately hoping for a good sale of earthen lamps this year.

The earthen lamp makers say their business has decreased significantly in the last two years, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. After the government imposed restrictions, the demand for diyas has reduced drastically, which in turn has taken a toll on their business.

The earthen lamp makers have alleged that without any support from the government, they are facing acute financial distress and are pinning their hopes on luck for some sales. Otherwise, they would be forced to leave this business and fend for themselves through other means.
