Amid the deteriorating Indo-Canadian tensions over the killing of pro-Khalistan separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, India has asked Canada to withdraw 41 diplomats from New Delhi by October 10. The ties between the two countries frayed after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed in the Parliamant that there has been credible evidence about complicity of Indian intelligence agents in the murder of the Khalistani leader. On September 18, he said the Canadian security agencies had been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the government of India and the killing of a Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar.Canada expelled an Indian diplomat on the same day while its Foreign Affairs Minister asserted that the Indian diplomat was the Indian intelligence chief in the country. This prompted India to take retaliatory action as it ousted an unnamed senior Canadian diplomat from New Delhi.
