This is the Panchapattamali Mountain in Kakiriguma region of Koraput district. A very picturesque setting, but not for a classroom, one would imagine. But it has become a school for these 23 girl students studying in Class-IX. Schools and colleges have been shut amid the Covid-19 restrictions across the state in Odisha. However, this has not stopped these young and enthusiastic girls from pursuing their education. Open-air schooling initiative has been started by a social service organisation. This initiative is helping these poor girls from being forced into child marriage and becoming migrant labourers. This ‘Adarsh Vidyalaya’ on the mountains conducts schooling for young girls mostly belonging to the Kandha tribal community living on the hilly region. Due to disruption in schooling amid the Covid-19 pandemic and lack of digital infrastructure in rural areas, numerous girls in the region were on the verge of giving up their education. However, some school teachers in the region were determined to help these young girls to continue their education.
