Classical dance forms of India have deep-rooted origins, same as the traditional, folk and tribal dance styles of the country. The simplicity of Indian classical dance forms is incredible and mesmerising at the same time. But did you know that there is an unforeseen connection between these classical dance forms of India and Yoga? Among the four types of yoga as described in Srimad Bhagavad Gita are Bhakti yoga, Jnana yoga and Karma yoga.

Indian classical dance forms are believed to be the inclusion of these three Yogas. Breath control, postures, centralisation of one’s energy and balance of body constitute the practice of Yoga. According to experts, the Indian classical dance forms are an amalgamation of these basis principles of Yoga.

Researcher in Odissi, Rekha Tandan describes about the connection of Odissi dance and Yoga in her book ‘Dance As Yoga’. She has illustrated about various mechanisms of Odissi that include creating, dispersing, and expressing energy and their interrelations with the practice of Yoga.

Apart from Odissi, classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Kathak, Manipuri and Kuchipudi are also believed to be a confluence of dance and yoga. On the occasion of International Yoga Day, let’s cherish the ancient roots of Indian classical dance forms and Yoga along with their beautiful amalgamations.
