BJD general secretary Sanjay Das Burma said that a conspiracy has been hatched to usurp Odisha’s wealth, its rich mineral resources and the Ratna Bhandar - Lord Jagannath temple's treasure trove.
At the meeting, Padma Shri recipient renowned sand artist Sudarsan Patnaik wished to know the present status of the Ratna Bhandar, its repair work and reopening. But his proposal was technically sidelined, saying the matter was not in the agenda.
Senior Congress leader Narasingha Mishra said, “It is mandatory for the government to open Ratna Bhandara and repair it after ASI issued letter to the government."
During the last inspection it was found that there was over 1280 kg gold jewellery in the treasure house. If Ratna Bhandar could be opened in 1980s, what is stopping the BJD government to open it now, the BJP leader questioned.
A decision regarding the reopening of Ratna Bhandar will be taken in a meeting which is scheduled to be held on September 27.
Notably on August 8, the ASI had written to SJTA Chief Administrator about its plans to inspect the treasure trove of Lord Jagannath.
Earlier on July 6, Puri king Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb expressed his desire to see the Ratna Bhandar to be opened as soon as possible. He also raised demands for early repair of the Ratna Bhandar as its condition is not good.
The state government had formed 24 Commissions in the last 21 years for different issues.
In an exclusive interview to OTV, the first servitor of Lord Jagannath at Srimandir expressed his desire to see the Ratna Bhandar to be opened as soon as possible.
The much-debated Ratna Bhandar of Srimandir which houses the treasury of Lord Jagannath is in a real bad shape and the Odisha government should take immediate steps to perform an inventory and restore it to its former glory, said Puri King Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb on Tuesday.

RTI activist Dillip Baral had sought information regarding the status of Ratna Bhandara’s original and duplicate keys. The district treasury officer’s letter, received by Baral in response to his query, has laid it bare that the keys of inner treasure chamber have been missing since 1970.
