The first World Cup was hosted and won by Uruguay in 1930, which had 13 teams take part. Uruguay is known for its deep history of the World Cup. Although just 18 matches in total were played, Uruguay worked hard for the title, particularly when they faced Argentina in their final match. In Montevideo, the Uruguayans defeated the Argentines 4-2, securing the honour of becoming the first-ever world champions.

Italy (1934)

The Italians also won the World Cup in their first year as hosts, before going on to repeat the feat in the future. With four World Cup titles, Italy is joint-second most successful at the tournament, just behind Brazil.

England (1966)
The Three Lions also won the World Cup in 1966 at Wembley, having won their only World Cup to date on that day. This year's victory was also won in extra time, with hosts England beating West Germany 4-2.

West Germany (1974)
Germany defied the trend of nations winning their first World Cup on home soil by winning the 1974 tournament as hosts. It was under the name West Germany, that the nation won the tournament, beating the Netherlands 2-1 at the Olympiastadion in Munich.

Argentina (1978)
In the 1978 World Cup, Argentina beat the Netherlands in extra time to claim victory. It was yet another World Cup final loss for the Netherlands, as they were beaten 3-1 in Buenos Aires by the home team. Mario Kempes and Daniel Bertoni were the stars on that day, scoring two goals at Estadio Monumental.

France (1998)
France won its first World Cup in 1998 on home soil, just like Uruguay, Italy and Argentina did.  In the finals at Stade de France, Zinedine Zidane, Frank Leboeuf, and Didier Deschamps all helped France to beat a Brazilian side with stars like Cafu, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, and Rivaldo with a score of 3-0.
