India’s talent depth is a ‘dream dilemma’ ahead of T20 World Cup: Former greats

Former Australia cricketer Tom Moody has underlined the unique challenge Indian cricket faces- an overabundance of quality players. According to Moody, while having such depth is a blessing, it also makes life extremely difficult for those tasked with finalising the playing XI. In a recent interaction, he said India’s vast pool of talent offers endless choices, turning selection into a complex exercise for both captains and selectors.

Adding to the discussion, former England captain and World Cup winner Eoin Morgan stressed the importance of strong bowling units in white-ball cricket. Morgan explained that teams capable of defending modest totals develop immense confidence, a factor that can make them formidable opponents in major tournaments like the World Cup.

These remarks come in the wake of India announcing their squad for the T20 World Cup 2026. Suryakumar Yadav will captain India in his maiden ICC event, with Axar Patel appointed as vice-captain. The squad was officially unveiled by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia at the board headquarters, alongside chief selector Ajit Agarkar and the skipper.

At the top of the order, explosive opener Abhishek Sharma, known for his strike rate of 188.02, is likely to open the innings, with Sanju Samson expected to join him. Ishan Kishan returns to the T20I setup as a reserve opener and wicketkeeper after last featuring in 2023.

India’s middle order boasts significant depth with Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Rinku Singh providing a blend of power and versatility. The spin department will be led by Kuldeep Yadav, supported by Varun Chakravarthy, while the pace attack will be spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, alongside Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana.
