Yashasvi Jaiswal, who recently slammed his maiden ODI century in the series against South Africa, has opened up about the unique relationship he shares with former India captain Rohit Sharma. The young opener played a match-winning knock in Vizag, stitching crucial partnerships with both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to script a dominant nine-wicket victory for India.
Having risen through the ranks under Rohit’s guidance, both as a Mumbai teammate and an opening partner in the national team, Jaiswal has always viewed the senior batter as a mentor figure. Their chemistry at the top of the order has often been highlighted as one of Indian cricket’s brightest developments.

Speaking about Rohit’s leadership style, Jaiswal revealed that behind the senior opener’s laid-back personality lies a caring yet demanding mentor who pushes youngsters to elevate their game.
“Whenever Rohit bhai scolds us, there’s a lot of love hidden in it,” Jaiswal said in a recent interaction. “Honestly, if Rohit bhai doesn’t scold me, I start feeling uneasy. I begin wondering if he’s upset with something I did.”
Even after stepping down from captaincy, Rohit continues to be a guiding force in the dressing room, especially for younger players like Jaiswal. The youngster recalled how Rohit reassured him during the Vizag chase, urging him to stay calm and take his time while Rohit took on the risks at the other end.
“How many seniors will say that?” Jaiswal remarked. “At the same time, Virat paaji gave me small targets and reminded me that we had to finish the match ourselves.”
With Rohit and newly-appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill ahead of him in the pecking order, Jaiswal is currently viewed as India’s backup opener. However, his impressive century has strengthened India’s confidence in him as they look ahead to future assignments.
The young batter’s reflections highlight not only his growth but also the invaluable support system provided by senior players, a key factor behind India’s consistent success at the top of the order.
