India will have a tough chance in 2027 WTC Final
India’s path to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 final has become increasingly complicated, with former opener Aakash Chopra warning that the team has left itself with almost no margin for error. What once looked like a manageable campaign has now turned into a steep uphill battle, requiring near-flawless performances in the remaining matches.
Led by Shubman Gill, India currently occupy sixth place on the WTC 2025–27 standings with a points percentage of 48.15. With three of their six Test series already completed, the team has crossed the halfway mark of the cycle but remains well outside the comfort zone in the race to the final.
A major blow to India’s campaign came at home against South Africa, where they failed to secure a single win and dropped all available WTC points. That setback followed a mixed tour of England, where India managed only a 2–2 draw in the five-match series, collecting less than half of the points on offer. Their only flawless showing so far has been against the West Indies, but those full points have not been enough to undo the earlier damage.
As a result, India now find themselves in a situation where every remaining series is crucial. They are yet to play Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia, and any slip-up could effectively end their hopes of making the WTC final.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra did not mince words while assessing India’s position. He acknowledged that while India might manage a perfect return against Sri Lanka, expecting similar results across the board is unrealistic. According to Chopra, winning every match in a five-Test series—something India would likely need to do against Australia at home-is extremely rare in modern Test cricket.
He also highlighted India’s long-standing struggles in New Zealand, pointing out that the team has not won a Test series there since 2009. Given those historical challenges, Chopra believes the odds are firmly stacked against India.
The former cricketer stressed that the 2–0 home series loss to South Africa has completely altered the WTC equation. Even a single victory in that series, he felt, could have kept India in a much safer position. Instead, the clean sweep has left the team relying on a string of exceptional results elsewhere.
