England head coach Brendon McCullum has made it clear that the team will not abandon its high-tempo playing identity, even after a bruising Ashes campaign against Australia. Despite England suffering a 4-1 series loss, McCullum insisted that the attacking approach popularly known as ‘Bazball’ remains central to the side’s long-term development.
The Ashes tour proved challenging, with England struggling to impose themselves consistently, particularly in the early part of the series. Bold team selections and risk-heavy strategies did not deliver the desired results in the opening Tests, allowing Australia to seize control. However, England showed glimpses of growth later on, registering a morale-boosting win at the MCG and pushing the hosts deep into the final day of the Sydney Test.
While critics questioned whether England’s aggressive philosophy had been exposed at the highest level, McCullum rejected suggestions that the team needs a complete reset. He argued that progress under his leadership should not be overlooked and stressed that adaptability does not require abandoning the principles that have driven recent improvements.
The former New Zealand captain acknowledged that refinement is necessary, particularly in handling crucial moments under pressure, but maintained that England are on the right path. He underlined his willingness to learn from setbacks while retaining confidence in the framework that has reshaped the team’s mindset.

McCullum also reaffirmed his desire to continue as England’s head coach, describing the Ashes tour as a learning experience rather than a reason for radical change. He emphasised that discarding the current approach in favour of uncertainty would undermine the progress already made, and believes staying committed to their philosophy offers England the best chance to grow stronger in the seasons ahead.
