The bodies of a woman and her minor son, who had been reported missing earlier this week, were recovered from two separate canals in Odisha’s Koraput district on Tuesday, triggering suspicion of a premeditated double murder and sending shockwaves across the area.
According to police, the boy’s body was found stuffed inside a sack near a canal under Kotpad police limits in Jeypore. Hours later, the body of his mother was recovered from another canal near Jayantgiri.
Sources said the mother and son had been missing since February 21, following which family members lodged a missing complaint at Borigumma police station. Acting on the complaint, police launched a search operation that led to the grim discovery.
Preliminary investigation suggests that a suspected love affair may be the motive behind the crime. Investigators believe that a young woman, allegedly involved in a relationship opposed by her family, may have conspired with her male associate to eliminate her mother and younger brother. It is suspected that the victims had objected to the relationship, leading to tension within the family.

The woman and her alleged male accomplice have been detained for questioning. Police officials said the exact cause of death will be ascertained after the post-mortem examination reports are received.
Further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events and confirm the motive behind the suspected double murder.
