Bhubaneswar: Several parts of Odisha are likely to experience pre-monsoon thunderstorm and lightning activity in the next five days, informed HR Biswas, director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, on Tuesday.

At present, an upper air trough runs from Bihar to Chhattisgarh and extends up to 1.5 km above the mean sea level. The trough from northwest Uttar Pradesh to interior Odisha across east Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh has become less marked, Biswas informed.

According to Biswas, several parts of Odisha, mainly interior and coastal districts, are expected to experience rain and thunderstorm accompanied by lightning in the next 24 hours.

Besides, yellow warning for thunderstorm and lightning has been issued for the districts of Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Bolangir, Nuapada, Sonepur, Boudh, Kalahandi, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sundergarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Cuttack tomorrow.

Day 2 Forecast (Valid from 0830 hrs of June 3 to 0830 hrs of June 4): Several districts of north coastal Odisha- Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Koraput, Kandhamal, Boudh, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Angul, Dhenkanl, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj - will experience thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind ( 30-40 kmph).

Heavy rainfall is also likely in districts of Ganjam, Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj and Jajpur.

Day 3 Forecast - Valid from June 4 (0830 hrs) to June 5 (0830 hrs): Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind likely to occur at one or two places in the districts of Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Cuttack, Angul, Sundergarh, Deogarh, Bargarhm Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak and Balasore.

“Rain, thunderstorm and lightning alert has been issued for several places in north, coastal and south Odisha for the next three days till June 4,” said Biswas.
