Security personnel deployed at Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar staged a strike on Tuesday, demanding strengthened protection after being allegedly attacked by protestors during unrest triggered by the death of a one-year-old child.
According to reports, during Monday’s confrontation, one guard was injured in a physical assault while attempting to control demonstrators. The strike disrupted routine operations at the hospital and sparked resentment among the guards.
Sources reported that the unrest began after the child’s death, which the family and others linked to alleged medical negligence and administration of incorrect medication.
Reports added that security guards had tried to pacify angry family members and local residents at the hospital premises, but faced aggressive confrontation. During the scuffle, guards were beaten, leaving at least one seriously injured. As such, they held a cease work, demanding stricter safety protocols while performing duty.
Hospital Operations Affected
The strike has led to the disruption of hospital activities, affecting access to certain wards and slowing routine operations, stated sources.
Security officials emphasised the need for protective measures, citing the risks of violent protests in response to medical incidents. The administration is reportedly reviewing safety measures for hospital staff in light of the ongoing tensions.
