The fire exchange continued for two hours until one of the Maoists was shot dead and others fled the scene. Meanwhile, one of the Jawans sustained bullet injuries and was rushed to Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).

The bullet pierced through his thighs and his condition is critical, medical sources said. Even as other Maoists escaped, Jawans have intensified search operations in the area. The incident has raised concerns as Malkangiri was Maoist-free, but the insurgents from Chhattisgarh are trying to penetrate Odisha once again.

The district of Malkangiri is recognised as a hotspot for Maoist activity, with frequent clashes between state forces and rebel groups. This incident forms part of a broader governmental initiative to counteract Maoist influence and ensure civilian safety in affected areas.

Authorities have intensified efforts through comprehensive operations aimed at dismantling Maoist networks. Such efforts underscore the ongoing volatility in the region and the determination of the authorities to restore order and stability.

Additional details regarding the incident are under investigation, as the authorities seek to determine the full extent of the encounter's impact.

Briefing media about the operation, Odisha DGP YB Khurania said,"...Since operations in Chhattisgarh have picked up, we are aware that Naxals from Chhattisgarh may try to enter Odisha. To prevent such entries, we are keeping a close eye on the bordering areas."
