An allegation of unauthorised ghee being brought into the Srimandir premises came to light on Monday after the temple administration seized a quantity of ghee allegedly sourced from outside, in violation of the mandated OMFED-only supply rule. The ghee was intercepted while it was reportedly being taken by a Suar Sevak from a devotee inside the temple premises.

Following the incident, the Srimandir administration issued notices to two individuals, seeking written explanations within seven days, officials said.

Ghee Seized During Internal Inspection

According to sources, a devotee identified as Rabindra Barik of Bira Harekrushnapur in Puri district was carrying the ghee into the Srimandir. The ghee was allegedly handed over to Jambeswar Suar, a Suar Sevak, when temple officials intervened during an internal check and seized the material.

Temple regulations strictly prohibit the entry of any ghee other than that supplied by OMFED. Acting on the directions of the Chief Administrator, notices were served to both individuals involved, asking them to submit satisfactory explanations regarding the incident within the stipulated time.

Strict OMFED-Only Rule in Place

The Srimandir administration had earlier enforced a strict policy mandating the exclusive use of OMFED-supplied ghee for the preparation of Mahaprasad and for lighting diyas inside the temple. The decision was taken following concerns over the use of ghee from multiple sources in the past.

Officials said the latest incident has brought renewed focus on enforcement, and a detailed inquiry has been initiated to ascertain how the ghee entered the temple premises. The probe will also examine whether the ghee was self-prepared or sourced externally.

Devotional Perspective Highlighted

Commenting on the issue, Jagannath Puja Panda Samanta said the matter also involves the faith of devotees.
“It is ultimately linked to belief. If a devotee takes a vow that upon receiving a cow, ghee prepared from that cow’s milk will be offered to Lord Jagannath, such offerings are guided by devotion,” he said.

On concerns related to quality and purity, he added that the temple administration should verify the quality of ghee offered by devotees, ensuring that it complies with established rules before being used for Mahaprasad preparation.
