A massive swarm of insects disrupted vehicular movement on the Kharasrota bridge under Jajpur Sadar police limits, Odisha, causing significant inconvenience to commuters on Saturday. Videos circulating online show thousands of insects flying over the bridge, which connects Jajpur to Bhubaneswar, making it difficult for vehicles to pass smoothly.

The situation reportedly worsens at night, with the insects flying continuously across the bridge and surrounding areas. The dense swarm caused two-wheelers to lose balance, while cars, buses, and trucks were forced to halt. Commuters said that the accumulation of insects on the road surface made it slippery, resulting in minor accidents and disruptions.

Seasonal Swarming Linked to Winter Chill

According to reports, these insects appear every year during the onset of winter. Their nests are believed to be located in nearby riverbanks and forested areas. Drawn towards light sources, the insects gather in large numbers and create a loud buzzing sound, particularly around moving vehicles or lighted zones. Despite the recurring nature of the problem, no preventive measures have been implemented so far by the administration, as sources said.

A resident of Jajpur said, “This is one of the main roads in our region, used by thousands of vehicles every day. Last night, a large swarm appeared suddenly and caused several accidents as visibility dropped. After falling onto the road, the insects made the surface muddy and slippery, causing vehicles to skid even after applying brakes.”
