Bhubaneswar: With Super Cyclone Amphan inching towards Indian coast and expected to make landfall between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sunderbans in the afternoon/evening of May 20, India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued heavy to very heavy rainfall warning for several parts of Odisha.

As per the latest weather bulletin, five districts in the State will experience heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. The districts which are likely to experience heavy rainfall are- Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara.

HR Biswas, director of the Regional Meteorological Centre (Bhubaneswar) informed that most of the coastal districts will experience heavy rainfall activity from tonight and it will gradually increase and continue till May 20.

Under the impact of Amphan, three districts- Cuttack, Puri and Khurda will experience heavy rainfall on May 19 (tomorrow) while districts of Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, said Biswas.

There is possibility of heavy rainfall in Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts on May 20.

Apart from rain, several parts of Odisha will experience squally winds with speed ranging between 45 kmph gusting upto 60-65 kmphr. The wind speed will gradually increase in different parts of the State (75 to 80 kmphr and gusting up to 110 to 135 kmphr) in the next 24 hours.

As it is a summer cyclone, there is no risk of flood in major rivers in Odisha. However, Collectors of 12 districts have been put on alert and asked to take necessary measures to tackle any emergency situation arising out of the impending cyclone threat.

Meanwhile, the Odisha chief secretary, Asit Kumar Tripathy, while briefing media persons today evening, said that even though super cyclone Amphan is not expected to make landfall in Odisha, Odisha government's preparations are of the highest degree.
