A trained sniffer dog named ‘Jackson’ helped Railway Police foil a ganja smuggling attempt during a search operation in Bhubaneswar. Jackson, who works under the RPF and GRP units, has detected suspicious parcels by sniffing out the presence of illegal narcotics concealed inside them, official sources said on Wednesday.

During routine checks on parcels being transported by train, Jackson alerted officers to two packages containing large quantities of ganja. Acting swiftly on the canine’s signal, the Bhubaneswar GRP seized the unclaimed parcels and intercepted two individuals involved in the smuggling attempt.
The illegal consignment was allegedly being transported from Bhubaneswar to Jhansi when the operation took place. Officials confirmed that Jackson’s timely detection prevented a significant amount of contraband from being trafficked through the railway network.
Authorities praised the sniffer dog’s sharp instincts and reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying checks to curb narcotics smuggling via trains.
“A joint team of RPF and GRP have been carrying out raids every day against narcotics peddlers and smuggling of the contraband items. The team comprised of a sniffer dog named Jackson,” GRP Bhubaneswar IIC, Ashok Kumar Gochhayat, said to OTV.
“Large packets containing Ganja were found and later seized, which were supposed to be smuggled. We have detained two persons in this connection,” the IIC expressed.
In another incident earlier in the day, a suspicious and unclaimed parcel was discovered in the Delhi–Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express. This sparked panic among passengers and triggered a prompt security response from the RPF. The incident occurred while the train was passing through Jharkhand, creating a sudden wave of anxiety among the passengers.
The parcel was spotted in the B1 coach by some passengers who immediately alerted the on-duty RPF personnel. With no individual stepping forward to claim ownership, the officers cordoned off the area and launched a preliminary inspection.
Sources said the Rajdhani Express was instructed to halt at the next major railway station, where the suspicious parcel could be safely unloaded.
